Ms. Henry's June 2022 Letter to Sixth-Grade Parents
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to 6th Grade! My name is Ms. Henry and I am so excited to get started with your child on all things Reading, Writing, and Social Studies! I am entering my 12th year of teaching (WOW!) and this is also my 12th year Shoesmith. Shoesmith is my second home and I love all the amazing ways we love and grow our kids here! My husband and I have lived in Logan Square for 9 years with our hound dog, Penny, and our 2-year-old son, Wilder. We are also expecting our second child, a baby girl, in December of 2022. This summer, we plan to go on a road trip out West with the whole family so please, keep us in your thoughts and, if appropriate, your prayers! 😜
Reading consistently over the summer is crucial to developing lifelong readers. Research tells us that students need to read during the summer to maintain their independent reading levels. In the fall, the impact of a student not having read during the summer months may result in a reading ability gap that could potentially widen each year, making it difficult for students to keep up with grade level reading expectations. Therefore, it is important as parents and teachers that we support our students over the summer so they enter the school year confident and ready!
We encourage parents and guardians to be active participants in their child’s summer learning and preparation for next year. In addition, feel free to set individual reading and math goals with your child as a way to get them focused on what they hope to accomplish in their sixth-grade year. We are asking that all parents look over their child’s Summer READING Assignment and Summer Reading Log as well as include any additional feedback, observations, or concerns that you may have regarding your child’s strengths or needs. For instance, if your child really got into a particular book series or genre, or if they struggled with the required summer reading book or specific math lessons, all of this information is important and valuable for your child’s teachers to know!
Please see our classroom websites for additional information and for copies of all the summer assignments and supply lists. Ms. Henry’s classroom website is: mshenry205.weebly.com (no “www”). Additionally, please feel free to reach out to us via e-mail at [email protected] (Ms. Henry) or [email protected] (Mr. Hodges) with any additional questions or concerns you may have.
We look forward to working with you and your child next year in the Sixth-Grade.
Have a WONDERFUL and RELAXING summer!
Sincerely,
The Sixth-Grade Team
